PATTI LABELLE: TASTY (BBR)
Patti! Patti! Patti Labelle! The voice that knows no boundaries! And here is vintage Patti and her second solo album since Labelle, released in 1976, but somewhat of a floundering release when compared to her debut eponymous release which soared. I’m in a quandary about this because the opening track “Save The Last Dance For Me” left me miserable in the extreme, and somewhat reluctant to venture further into this re-issue. However, I’m, glad I did because, although there’s no pattern to the music as Patti switches from one style to another, there are a few shining highlights. One, of course, is the huge disco/funk hit “Eyes In The Back Of My Head”, the gospel tinged “Quiet Time” and perhaps the pop ballad “Little Girls”. Both songs are still included in her live repertoire today. There’s also the highly credible Salsa/Latin influenced “Teach Me Tonight (Me Gusta Tu Baile)” and “You Make It So hard (To Say No)”. One of her best albums? No, but what’s good is great and, despite my words, “Tasty” played a vital role in the continuing growth of one of the world’s finest and much loved ladies of soul. And for that alone, it deserves my respect.
