PATTI LABELLE: RELEASED EXPANDED EDITION (BBR)
I’ll make no bones about it, this lady does it for me every time. She’s never known any boundaries – she opens her mouth and lets rip whether it’s a gut wrenching drama or the tenderest of love songs. Yup, Patti LaBelle is a true star in all the word’s connotations. First released in 1980, this was her fourth solo album for Epic Records and, although it wasn’t crammed with amazing tracks from start to finish, what is good is actually quite brilliant. With Labelle tucked comfortably in her past, Patti’s musical path took a different turning: it became more defined, more personal (if you like) and less frantic, as the rock/funk Labelle presented to the world, is replaced with her solo intoxication. “Ain’t That Enough” and “I Don’t Go Shopping” (her highest solo R&B hit at no 26) are particular highlights here, portraying as they do, an incredibly stylish singer who has perfected her art. “Get Ready (Lookin’ For Love)” and “Come And Dance With Me” up the pace, while the cd closes in a reflective mood with “Find The Love”. Producer Allan Toussaint (who, among other things, produced Labelle’s gold single “Lady Marmalade”) and Patti (who also penned several of the tracks) work so well together: two people with one soul, and it’s this that ensures their music has no sell by date!
