REGINA BELLE: ALL BY MYSELF (FTG)
This is her first album which spawned five US hits – not bad going for this lady who first came to our notice late-1986. After being hooked up with The Manhattans as their opening act, Regina went on to record “Where Did We Go Wrong” with them. This in turn came to the attention of Columbia Records, the company that later signed her as a soloist. So what have we? “Show Me The Way”, the CD’s opener, was also the first extracted single – full-blooded, rich in melody and high on chorus. Perfect start to set the mood here. The lady’s vocals are terrifically inspiring, expressive and soulful. A faster paced “Take Your Love Away” follows to lead into an almost sultry delivery on “Please Be Mine”, low-keyed and credible, but, unfortunately so easily overlooked by the lurking monster sound of “After The Love Has Lost Its Shine”: a huge ballad of note a la Whitney. Wow! “So Many Tears”, the second single, slanting towards the Sade-mood, so relevant at the time, makes this CD a vital purchase. That, and the seven bonus tracks which includes another beauty – “Without You”, Regina’s duet with Peabo Bryson. ‘Nuff said, methinks!
