THE DRAMATICS: DRAMA V EXPANDED EDITION (SMR)
This often underrated group might not be at the top of people’s listening lists, yet their music has been a part of our lives since the early sixties. (Younger readers take no notice of that statement!) The Dramatics have survived several membership changes, proving the group is bigger than the individual – ripples in the ocean, so to speak.

“Drama V” is actually their sixth
album, and second for ABC Records, when the company had the hitmaking roster of acts like the Four Tops, Eloise Laws and Rufus. Opening here with the mid-pacer and tightly presented “You’re Fooling You” - the debut extracted single which faltered in the US mainstream chart, but shot into the R&B top ten - we move into a much smoother, more melodic “She’s A Rainmaker”, seeping angst and despair. With its restrained vocals,

“I Was The Life Of The Party” is another to jerk at the heart strings, against mellow, often dreamy orchestration, while “Come Out Of Your Thing” is another soulful slice of sophisticated soul, with support vocals stemming lead vocal breaks, or adding the fuller sound that is the group’s signature.

Yet, “Just Shopping (Not Buying Anything)” strays from the accepted path, to suggest a slight jazz feel, that turns out to be comfortable and easy to be lulled into. Mmm, I curled up on my sofa on this wet Saturday afternoon, closed my eyes, and let the music hug me. Having The Dramatics sing to me as well, was an added bonus.
