THE DRAMATICS: JOY RIDE (SMR)
Ah, here we are with the follow-up to “Drama V” which I cuddled up to one wet Saturday afternoon just recently, and what a welcome slice of music this is, proving there’s more to these guys than 1972’s “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get”. There’s no dips or highs here because the group maintain a consistent high standard throughout. Not only that, this CD holds a trio of top selling R&B hits during 1976/77 – “Finger Fever”, aimed squarely at the dance floor; “Be My Girl”, and the lush ballad “I Can’t Get Over You”. This CD was another big seller for the Detroit-based group who was now riding high, and who recruited the same producers, namely, Michael Henderson, Don Davis and Tony Hester. “After This Dance” is a super jazz/soul slice of music, while “Say The Word” is an emotional ride, and it’s this diversity that ensured the group stayed in the musical fast lane. But I have to agree with Michael Henderson’s comments in the CD notes written by Janine Coveney, that everyone loves The Dramatics – “They had that mass appeal (but) I don’t think they’ve gotten the attention they deserve”. However, it’s never too late, and with SMR’s dedicated re-issue programme, The Dramatics live on, capturing new fans as well as satisfying their existing following. A great, great release which comes highly recommended for sure!
