ISAAC HAYES: FOR THE SAKE OF LOVE (BBR)
This guy could charm the birds from the trees, or probably, more realistically, a woman into his bed. His voice alone is enough to….well, you get my meaning. So, with his music in mind, this CD is Mr Hayes’ second studio album for Polydor Records, issued in 1978. It’s a musical kaleidoscope switching from dance to ballad – and what better way to start than with the smooth “Just The Way You Are”. It’s easy and sentimental; blissfully lovely. At the complete end of the scale is the andrenalin racer “Shaft II” (which brought together musicians who played on the iconic original) and “Zeke The Freak” ; both were aimed squarely at the dancefloor. His version of James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” simply melts in your mouth, while his commentary in “If We Ever Needed Peace” transforms prayer into music. As an aside, Isaac’s composing career spanned over 45 years, and his pure baritone voice has to be one of the most recognisable in the world. He had a commanding presence and talent to match, and this CD while maybe not wearing a platinum overcoat, certainly wears a gold one. It’s a perfect reminder of the man who propelled black music up another notch! Pity record buyers in 1978 didn’t feel the same way.
